Outrage as iconic 130-year-old inner Sydney pub set for redevelopment into retail space

A proposed redevelopment of an iconic, 130-year-old inner-Sydney pub into a new retail space has been met with outrage from local residents, who oppose the move due to the landmark's "huge historical and cultural significance".

The Village Inn in Paddington, the suburb's oldest remaining pub, first opened its doors on the corner of Glenmore Road and Oxford Street in 1890 - some 133 years ago.

The institution is now set to be transformed into a retail hub, with stores to be opened on ground level and office space on its upper floors, according to the development notice.
